Wat is poetry?

Last week, i had two enlightening classes on poetry in my Intro to E.lit course, now i know wat poetry really is! Here r some things tt may help u guys who like to write. :)

Wat is poetry?

"It is where the voice of the writer n the ears of the reader meet."

Ambiguity is present in all poems, sometimes, only the writer knows wat it really means. Poets seldom explain their poems to readers. To the poets, explaining their poems is like deconstructing an exquisite puzzle box after they have pain-stakingly pieced it together.

It is ok if different readers have different interpretations, but the readers must be able to back up their interpretations wif evidence fr the poem. In tis way, both the writer, thru his/her words, n the reader, thru his/her interpretation, determines the meaning of the poem, n thus the above quote. Songs r different in the sense tt the lyrist wants the reader of his/her lyrics to get the meaning straight.

"Poems r combinitions of sound n fresh ideas."

Poets look for ways to say things in a manner in which no one has done so b4. A gd poem is a form of art, a new creation, a clever invention.

Poems differs fr prose in tt it has music. The poet knows the sound of his words as he is penning them down. Tis music usually comes fr rhyming words, alliteration or assonance.

Alliteration is the repetition of consonants, eg. "..after life's fitful fever.."
Assonance is the rhyming of vowels, eg. "..fat black heart.."

"..only by the form, the pattern, can words or music reach the stillness.."

When reading a poem, we should observe the technique, which is the patterns n structure, imagery n metaphors.

We should also observe the oddness in the structure of a poem, for the strangeness of it is it's very mode of originality.

yeah i realise i shdnt have done tt in the past when my tutor brought tt up haha. n one more thing, he said if a poem is really gd, then the readers can derive its meaning fr the poem itself wifout any knowledge of writer's background or context. i think tt also supports the view tt no personal explanation fr poet is needed.
